In 1941 sixteen clubs in London and the south-east broke away from the wartime competitions set up by the Football League and ran their own league. Naturally this led to the Football League withdrawing their membership rights, which might have led to some interesting post-war arrangements had the dispute not been settled quickly. Arsenal finished top, with Portsmouth and West Ham United in second and third place. The London Cup was also run outside of Football League control (twelve clubs in 1940-41, sixteen in 1941-42).

Shortage of newsprint and wartime reporting priorities meant that many of the matches played went unrecorded by the press, and the author is pleased to be able to provide the first full set of match details, with line-ups, scorers and attendances. A narrative account recalls the players and events of the time.
